Around 1807…
…the Shockly Adams Tavern and Store opened on this site. At that time, the air was thick with the scent of wood smoke, leather, and a medley of goods. You might stop by to pick up some provisions such as flour, coffee or tea or dried beans and peas. Or you might be purchasing a new hatchet, a lantern and some twine. In the Tavern, hearty stews, in-season vegetables and Johnnycakes filled the plate while you enjoyed beer and maybe some whiskey or rum for a special occasion. The tavern was more than just a place to eat and drink; it was a social hub – a place to hear news and a vital stop for anyone passing through the small community of McColl. The atmosphere was lively, filled with the sounds of conversation, laughter, and the clinking of mugs. It was a simple taste of life on the South Carolina frontier!
By 1825, Jesse Bethea had taken over the building and renamed it the Crossroads Farmhouse. Jesse raised a family and worked the farm.
Four generations later, Diane Bethea Boeger has re-imagined the Crossroads Farmhouse. It retains its position as a social hub and offers 21st century amenities for adventuresome travelers as a bed and breakfast. It also can be reserved for your special occasion and we’ll still serve whisky and rum!
